I am writing to bring your attention to the inhumane and archaic practice of horse slaughter in Canada. 

Most horses in North America are not raised with the sole purpose of human consumption and routinely receive drugs that are toxic to humans if ingested. Phenylbutazone (“horse aspirin”) is one commonly used drug that is known to cause fatal human diseases. There is no known safe level for residues of these drugs in horsemeat.

Horses are gathered from various random sources, and there is not a system in Canada to track what drugs horses receive to ensure their meat is safe for humans. 

The majority of responsible owners do not choose sending their pets to a meat plant as an end of life option. It is not humane euthanasia; it is a betrayal of our trusted companions. The slaughter process is absolutely terrifying to them, and many horses suffer during the misguided and often repeated attempts to render them unconscious.  

While we would never presume to tell people what to eat, we can offer a viable solution that not only protects fellow humans, but also protects the economical side for our province.

Parkland county representative, Mr.Shane Getson, will be proposing a solution to this in the near future; an addition to current legislation regarding legitimate traceability. Your constituency presumes you will see the need for supporting something of such significance.
