Legacys Stand

Her Story

On May 24th, a frail, elderly mare was pushed through an Alberta auction ring. Obviously sore and emaciated. A living, breathing billboard for suffering and neglect. With volunteers and supporters at their back Horse Heroes was able to contact the buyer and arrange for her to come into their care. She collapsed in the trailer leaving the auction. A volunteer jumped in giving her water and making sure none of the other horses trampled her. A kindness she may not have been given without rescue assistance.

As there was no mistaking the mare was suffering a vet was called out at 1am. Her suffering was deeper than anyone knew. A previously broken stifle, left without medical intervention, advanced arthritis, and a body in slow, silent collapse. She had endured unthinkable pain—overlooked, and allowed to continue.

They relieved what pain they could and Legacy spent the next day and half surrounded by volunteers. They brushed her, brought her treats, whispered comfort into her ears, and stood beside her.

On May 26th, surrounded by gentle hands and loving hearts, Legacy was laid to rest.

Her life may have ended, but her story has not. Legacy lit a fire—a call to demand better for the animals still suffering in silence.
